An ekphrastic song inspired by a scene from Secret Six, the superhero team comic book by Gail Simone and Nicola Scott. Issue #10, from 2008ish, I believe. Intended not only for comics nerds, but for anyone who has had, or knows someone who has had, a night when they tried to kick an addiction.
lyrics
Voice 1: the sleepless
I’d like to kick all my habits
What I want, I can’t have it
So lately I don’t sleep through the night
What we do, it’s a secret,
It’s a scandal, don’t believe it
If it meant you’d just knock me out, then I would put up a fight
Voice 2: the visitor
I understand, more than you'll ever know
We go where the lowlies will never go
To the others, we are scandal and bane
So don’t you misunderstand me
I know what can and what can’t be
Yet here we are, we’re one and the same
And we’re unlikely to change
and it’s starting to rain
and it’s starting to rain
I fear the dreams and the waking
I will be free as the forsaken
I won’t make it, I’m shaking, I’m gone
Tonight must mean nothing
But tonight could be something
I’ll stay with you til we get to the dawn
'Cause tonight is the hard part
You just might make a new start
You just gotta make it till the hour of six
There’s still good in this world
There are oysters, there are pearls
Ain't no problem we can’t try to fix
I won’t leave you / I won’t keep you
I won’t keep you / I won’t leave you
I swear I’ll be here whenever you wake
And now look, there’s the sunrise
And the shine in your dark eyes
And hey look, it’s also starting to rain
